Achieve Clearer Vision with LASIK
Laser eye surgery can mean freedom. At least for those who rely on glasses or contacts to correct their vision. After all, laser eye surgery can reduce or eliminate your dependence on eyeglasses frames and contact lenses.
There are several types of laser eye surgeries that are safe and effective and can correct vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. But like any surgery, there are some things to consider before undergoing one of these elective procedures.
At Prairie Vision, we offer laser eye surgery consultations, LASIK referrals, and co-management plans. Our goal is to ensure you have the information you need to make the right decision for you and your vision needs. Call us today if you’d like to learn more about LASIK and find out if you’re a good candidate.
What Is LASIK?
The cornea is the transparent dome on the front of your eye and helps refract (bend) light through your eye. A refractive error occurs when the shape of your eye or cornea prevents light from reaching the light-sensitive tissue (retina) at the back of the eye.
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, more commonly known as LASIK, is one of the most common eye surgeries to correct a refractive error by reshaping the cornea.
LASIK involves cutting and folding back a paper-thin, hinged flap in your outer cornea to reveal the underlying corneal tissue. Using a computerized laser programmed to your prescription, precise amounts of tissue are vaporized to reshape your cornea, correcting the refractive error.
The flap is then put back in place, it reattaches within 2 to 3 minutes, and heals completely in a few days. This procedure is safe and effective, with 90% of patients achieving 20/20 or 20/40 vision without glasses or contacts and minimal side effects.
Who Is a Good Candidate for LASIK?
Not everyone can qualify for LASIK. To be a good candidate, you’ll need to meet certain qualifications:
- Be 18 or older and ideally over 21, when your vision is likely stable
- Have an eye prescription that hasn’t changed much in the previous year
- Have a corneal thickness that can support a flap
- Have good eye health and good overall general health
- Be realistic about expectations of surgical outcomes
Additionally, some conditions that can disqualify you from LASIK include:
- An unstable or changing refractive error
- High (degenerative) myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism
- Severe dry eyes
- Thin corneas
- Corneal abrasion
- Corneal disease
- Keratoconus (cone-shaped cornea)
- Advanced glaucoma
- Cataracts
- A history of eye infections
- Diabetes
- Pregnancy or nursing
Is LASIK Eye Surgery for You?
Every eye is unique, so a laser eye surgery consultation is the best way to know if LASIK will work for you. Our eye care team is here to help you make the best decision for your vision. Our consultations include a comprehensive eye exam and a discussion about your lifestyle, vision needs, eye health history, and expectations.
We’ll provide you with our findings, go over the details of the procedure, and refer you to a trusted ophthalmologist who will perform the surgery. After your procedure, we’ll have you come to us at Prairie Vision to monitor your healing, check your vision, and treat any side effects. We’re as invested in your eye health as you are!
